Dr. Dennis Black is a pediatric gastroenterologist, hepatologist
and an established researcher in the area of neonatal lipid absorption
and metabolism. He was recruited in December 1997 as Scientific
Director of the Children's Foundation Research Center. He
is currently professor of pediatrics and physiology at The University
of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Black oversees the
day-to-day operation of the center, facilitates the research activities
of all center investigations and supervises the allocation of the
Children Foundation's Research Center resources. He works
closely with the Children's Foundation Board of Directors and keeps
the members with up-to-date information, activities and achievements
of the Center.
Dr. Black was born in Covington, Tennessee, graduated from Memphis
State University and received his medical degree from The University
of Tennessee College of Medicine. He completed an internship
and residency at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center. He followed
with a pediatric gastroenterology fellowship at Le Bonheur.
He is a member of Alpha Omega Alapha Honor Society, the Research
Society Sigma Xi, Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi along with many
other societies and professional organizations. Dr. Black
holds several appointments with The University of Tennessee Medical
Center and was granted tenure in 2000. He has presented over
400 lectures or courses on various liver or transplantation topics
and is a highly sought-after speaker on liver disease. According
to his students, Dr. Black is an excellent teacher and mentor for
them and is instrumental in their medical education.
Dr. Black is married to Dr. Gail Beeman and they have three children.
